Apple crisp is a comforting dessert that holds a special place in many fall and winter traditions. With its warm, cinnamon-spiced apples and crisp oat topping, this dessert embodies the cozy essence of the season. Families often prepare apple crisp for gatherings or to enjoy a simple treat after dinner. The combination of fresh apples and a crunchy topping makes it irresistible, especially when served warm with ice cream.
Ingredients
Scale
- For the Topping:
- ⅔ cup all-purpose flour
- ⅔ cup old-fashioned oats
- ⅔ cup light brown sugar
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
- For the Filling:
- 6 cups peeled, thinly sliced apples (like Honeycrisp or Fuji)
- 3 tablespoons apple juice (or orange juice)
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons flour
- ¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F and grease a 9-inch baking dish.
- Prepare the topping by mixing flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Stir in melted butter until combined and set aside.
- Prepare the apples by tossing them with apple juice, sugar, flour, cinnamon, and vanilla in a large bowl.
- Assemble the dish by spreading the apple mixture evenly into the baking dish. Sprinkle the topping over the apples.
- Bake covered with foil for 20 minutes to soften the apples. Remove foil and bake uncovered for an additional 25-30 minutes, until the topping is golden and the apples are tender.
- Let it cool slightly, and serve warm, ideally with vanilla ice cream or caramel sauce.
Notes
For a richer flavor, mix and match different apple varieties. Vanilla ice cream is a traditional but optional topping!
