Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy

  • Author: Martha

Description

Hamburger steaks with onion gravy is a classic comfort dish featuring juicy beef patties smothered in a rich, savory onion gravy. This simple yet satisfying meal pairs perfectly with mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite vegetables, making it an ideal choice for family dinners or weeknight meals.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Hamburger Steaks:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil

For the Onion Gravy:

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Prepare the Hamburger Steaks
In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix the ingredients until well incorporated, but avoid over-mixing to keep the meat tender. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape them into patties.
  • Cook the Patties
Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, add the hamburger steaks and cook for 4-5 minutes per side, until they are browned and cooked through. Once done, remove the steaks from the skillet and set them aside on a plate, leaving the drippings in the pan.
  • Cook the Onions
In the same skillet, add the thinly sliced onions to the drippings. Cook the onions over medium heat, stirring occasionally, for 5-7 minutes until they are softened and begin to caramelize. The natural sweetness of the onions will add depth to the gravy.
  • Make the Gravy
Once the onions are nicely browned, sprinkle the flour over them and stir until the onions are evenly coated. Gradually pour in the beef broth while stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Allow the gravy to simmer for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens to your desired consistency.
  • Combine and Finish
Return the cooked hamburger steaks to the skillet, nestling them into the onion gravy. Spoon the gravy over the steaks and let them simmer together for an additional 2-3 minutes. This allows the flavors to meld, and the steaks absorb some of the rich gravy.
  • Serve
Serve the hamburger steaks with onion gravy over a bed of creamy mashed potatoes or alongside fluffy rice. Add a side of steamed vegetables for a balanced and hearty meal.

Notes

  • Make sure to use a good quality beef broth to elevate the flavor of the gravy. For a lighter version, you can also use chicken or vegetable broth, though the taste will differ slightly.
  • If you want to lighten up the dish, consider using ground turkey instead of beef. You can also swap regular breadcrumbs for panko for a slightly different texture.
