Preparation Steps:

Step 1: Activate the Yeast

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm whole milk, active dry yeast, and a pinch of sugar. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy. This indicates that the yeast is active and ready for use.

Step 2: Mix the Dry Ingredients 2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, sugar, and salt.

Step 3: Combine Wet Ingredients 3. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the activated yeast mixture. Add the eggs and mix until a shaggy dough forms.

Step 6: Let It Rise 6. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm, draft-free place for 1-2 hours or until it has doubled in size.

Step 7: Shape and Proof 7. After the first rise, punch down the dough gently and shape it into a loaf or divide it into smaller portions for individual rolls or buns. Place them in greased baking pans or on a baking sheet, cover, and let them proof for another 30-45 minutes.

Step 8: Preheat and Egg Wash 8. Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). In a small bowl, whisk together the egg yolk and 1 tablespoon of milk to make an egg wash. Brush it over the top of the brioche for a golden finish.

Step 9: Bake 9. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes (adjust time for smaller portions) until the brioche is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
